I was a huge fan of Farscape in high school (*insert shaking of fist at the SciFi channel here*), so it was a delight to get the chance to read katiemariie's story You Birthed It, which threw the characters of the two of the shows together and just let the personalities play off of one another. This mix ended up on the serious side of things, but the fic (while playing with some deep concepts) has plenty of humorous moments too. If you're a fan of both of these shows, I recommend giving the fic a try!

So, my walk-train-walk commute is about thirty-seven minutes in the morning, plus or minus two minutes depending on when I arrive at the BART (aka metro) station. This is too short for most albums, and far too long for me to be fiddling with my music the entire way, trying to get the perfect balance of songs that will take me from a sleep-bedraggled zombie into a functioning, productive cubicle-drone member of the workforce.

Therefore: a mix.

In fact, I made six mixes, because variety is the spice of life (and the spice must flow).

There's ten songs on each mix, running time 37 to 40 minutes, and they're generally happy, although I focused more on how the songs made me feel than the particular lyrics (in most cases). There's links to download each mix after the track list, or you can download all of them at the very bottom. Enjoy!

A mixture of ninety stock icons from the magnificent collection of photographs of nature, people, and places from Weeks 1 through 6 of National Geographic's 2011 Photo Contest. I highly recommend browsing through the submissions - there are so many more images there which can't be captured properly in an icon. Weeks 7 through 12 will be along in a few days

Poll #1808828 Which movie for the Reel Love Challenge?

Movie Options:

Sweet Home, Alabama - with Bones as Reese Witherspoon & Jim as Josh Lucas
About a Boy - with Jim as Hugh Grant & Bones as Rachel Weisz
Jerry Maguire - with Jim as Tom Cruise & Bones as Renée Zellweger (& Sulu as Cuba Gooding, Jr.)
You should be fulfilling your umpteen hundred other things first, Jac!

Addendum: I'm not sure how Bones ended up being cast as the girl in all the movies, although I suspect it ties into the whole "semi-asshole-ish lead hero who is redeemed by the girl" thing that romcoms do. Well, except for Sweet Home, Alabama, but there the fun is that the casting isn't what you'd expect. Also, About A Boy would almost certainly be the most ensemble-y of them, and probably end up differing as much from the movie as the movie did from the book. Also, I was very tempted to put in 50 First Dates, casting uncertain.

Title: Oh, Reckless Abandon
Author: jactrades
Written for: livelovehump
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters/Ship: Chapel/McCoy, Joanna
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 for language
Wordcount: ~1,800
Prompt: I sort of smushed together all three, which included a five times fic of lost tempers when the other manged to get themselves injured, jealousy at a fancy gathering, and Joanna being a bit of a brat because, hey, kids dealing with divorce can be like that sometimes.

Summary: Four times either McCoy or Chapel got upset when the other managed to get hurt (stupidly), and one time they both got hurt and no tempers were lost at all (much).

Notes: Loved the prompts so much - thanks for the inspiration, livelovehump! And thanks to my husband for allowing himself to harangued into betaing. Title from The Temper Trap's song Sweet Disposition. Cross-posted at mccoy_chapel.
She doesn’t say, “For fuck’s sake, McCoy, it was a simple accident.” She doesn't say it, but they're three days into a five-year mission and he's already learned that his head nurse's glares can speak volumes.Collapse )

Title: Riverside, Iowa
Author: jactrades
Written for: space_wrapped 2011
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters/Pairing: Kirk/McCoy, Sulu-POV
Rating/Warnings: PG-13 for language & zombies
Wordcount: ~2,800
Summary: Sulu didn't think it was that big a deal, volunteering to jump deep into zombie territory. McCoy was a bit more vocal on the whole "parachuting in" part.
Notes: Zombie AU/fusion with the novel World War Z. If you haven't read the book, the only thing to note is that it's structured as a series of short interviews commissioned by the U.N. after humanity's hard-won victory in WWZ. I strayed pretty far from the prompt, and, um, the holiday spirit, but there are zombies in December and McCoy gets a pretty awesome present at the end.

   Riverside, Iowa, USA

As I park my car on the west side of the town square I’m struck by the sense of prosperity that Riverside emanates. Beds of flowers line the walkway as I cross the green, narrowly avoiding a trio of children splashing each other by the center fountain. The famous series of walls guarding the city center are visible, of course, and the standard fail-safes – many of which were invented within these very walls – can be found tucked unobtrusively into corners, but the overall feeling is one of pre-war normalcy. I am not sure what I expected from Riverside, the largest of the civilian-run blue zones to survive east of the Rockies, but this isn’t it. A Ms. Rand meets me as I enter the unassuming building that serves as the town’s city hall. She escorts me politely to a small conference room where I meet Hikaru Sulu.Collapse )

If anyone follows Star Trek on facebook or twitter (the official startrek.com people), you might want to tune in today. *highly amused*
When I saw the summaries of the STBB fics, I crossed my fingers in the hopes of getting turtle_goose's The Once & Future Captain because I've had thoughts about mixing a Tarsus fic (mostly centered around track 12). Lucky me, I got the chance to create a mix for this story! :D I really enjoyed the clear thought that went into the world-building in this story, and if you're a sucker for Tarsus fics (like me), you shouldn't pass this one up.

Hello Unknown Author!

First off, thank you for writing for me! I absolutely adore all of the fandoms I requested, so I'm sure that I'll adore anything you write for me in them. And yay! you like at least one of them as well, so I'm doublely sure anything you write will be awesome. Please consider all of my preferences/suggestions/prompts below as optional, and don't sweat it if your inspiration takes you elsewhere. I'd MUCH rather read something you loved writing than something you wrote under duress after having a wtf moment at my prompts. Seriously, I'll be happy with whatever you send my way! :-)

Long details on everything under the sunCollapse )

You guys, I am so excited to finally be able to post about this story! Somewhat excited to post my art, but mostly I'm just excited that I can finally say YOU SHOULD GO READ rynne's KIRK PRIME/SPOCK PRIME REBOOT FIC!

17 November 2011 @ 10:44 am

Looks like a much more standard fairy tale story than we've seen from Pixar before, but yay! for a female hero for once and for those accents. And the hair.
Where do I even start with the brilliant story that inspired this mix?

Look, it'd be an awesome fic if it were just an AOS version of The Cloud Minders, but rainbowstrlght takes the TOS episode and revamps it perfectly using the story of The Princess Bride. There's endless questions and asides from a stuck-in-Sickbay Joanna as the story unfolds, there's Spock as one of the storytellers (hilarious), there's Jim getting his ass kicked by the Dread Pirate, there's political shenanigans a plenty, and, of course, there are Rodents of Unusual Size.

So, yeah, check out the masterpost here for links to the fic and art!

1. It's Friday.

2. It's Friday. Trust me, this really deserves two points this week.

3. Pumpkin Buttered Rum. Hot dark rum, with a bit of spiced pumpkin butter & brown sugar stirred in? Why, yes, I'll have a bowlful, please.

4. Most everything is packed up and ready for the move tomorrow. We're hiring professional movers for the first time ever - EXCITING! I look forward to sipping my pumpkin buttered rum on the wood floor while they carry the couch in. (Rule #82 of moving - always prominently label the box with the alcohol.)

5. Hot Daily did a TWO PART picspam of sexy in space this week, and goddamn, they covered just about everyone I've ever lusted after or currently lust after on television. Farscape! Star Wars (original and prequel)! Vintage SF! Battlestar Galactica! Firefly! All the Dr. Who! Star Trek! EVEN MOAR STAR TREK!

Serious mood-lifter, guys, go check it out.

Title: Jumping Into Puddles
Author: jactrades
Written for: maypirate's Halloween treat
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters/Pairing: Kirk/Sulu
Rating/Warnings: PG for language
Wordcount: ~1,500
Summary: "Hire the best people you can find," they say. "You'll sleep better at night," they say. Modern day AU with Kirk at the head of a startup. Yeah.
Notes: Partially inspired by maypirate's very old prompt from eppic's Second Sulu-Off, found here, and partially by the GQMF at the end.

The mistake, actually, was in agreeing with anything McKenna suggested. That’s the line Jim’s going with when Hikaru asks.Collapse )
No pictures of my costume this morning, since I couldn't find my eye patch before work, so here's one of my coworker's cute dog:

I walked into the kitchen to discover a wizard explaining his theory about how all things magical end up in Albania to the head of the SF office, who is a proper pirate. I do enjoy my coworkers.

In other news, moving plans have kicked into high gear:
1. We had an open house on Sunday at the place we're currently renting for new potential tenants - our landlords are really great, and we know how it is from the other side, so it was the least we could do to help them find new renters. The dogs managed to contain themselves to just joyously greeting all of the new folks coming through. Panda, of course, got himself chased by a two-year-old screaming, "Doggie, doggie, hi doggie!"

2. We started packing. One room 80% done, a thousand boxes to go.

3. We met our new roommate! He seems like a really nice guy - just turned 30, somewhat geeky (ComicCon & BlizzCon sort of geek), and apparently cooks a mean Thai dish. I think we'll all work out well. *crosses fingers*

Oh, and from thistlerose

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'.

Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and I'll give you a treat. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

When I realized I'd be making a mix for striped_fic/waketosleep's STBB fic, Big Me (But It's You I Fell Into), I nearly squealed out loud in my living room, because that meant I'd be getting to read the story before y'all and that, folks, is exciting. And then I did squeal when I got my hands on the rough draft and realized that Happy Gilmore could probably be blamed for half of it.

This story did not disappoint.  It is hilarious and FUN, with a core of sweetness balanced with an unhealthy amount of swearing. READ IT!

You don't need to be a Kirk/Spock shipper to enjoy it - the whole supporting cast is equally fantastic as the pairing (Winona & Bones especially). You don't need to know anything about golf, either - all I know about the sport is from Happy Gilmore and the minigolf range - which, incidentally, is about as much knowledge as Jim starts out with here too. :-D

Anyway, yeah, I loved the story, and I hope my mix, The Long Game, (which is generally redic, btw) is half as fun.

It's Friday, have a question meme!

1. Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?
They remain in a state of permanent "however the last entity to access the closets left them" - i.e. I close them, unless there's a suitcase or pile of clothes resting on the floor of the closet in the way, Abhi leaves them open unless the dogs have been making dog-nests out of the pile of clothes (in which case he nudges the clothes in enough to shut the closet doors). Because he's heartless like that.

The dogs push the doors open with their noses if there's a crack so they can sleep on our clothes.

We're all adults here, and this isn't at all an indicator for how the rest of this meme shall go.

2 through *deep breath* 99 hereCollapse )
